My Slow Fall Morning Routine: Simple Hygge Ideas

· · Comments

Summer is not quite over, but September always seems to bring a change to the mornings.

The days may still be warm, but mornings start to feel a little different. Schedules pick back up, routines return, and after a summer of later nights and more spontaneous days, I find myself wanting a little more structure again.

Not the kind that involves waking up at 5 a.m. or squeezing more into the day. Just a few familiar things that make mornings feel easier and more enjoyable.

This is usually when I start returning to my fall morning routine.

Over the years, I have figured out that my favorite morning habits are also the simplest ones: making tea before checking my phone, sitting down for breakfast, leaving a few minutes for a book or magazine, and not feeling like I have to start the day at full speed.

There is something very hygge about that kind of morning.

What Does a Hygge Morning Routine Look Like?

For me, it looks less like a checklist and more like a handful of things I genuinely enjoy doing before the day gets busy.

If hygge is new to you, this is probably the easiest way to think about it. A hygge morning is simply one that feels comfortable, unhurried, and a little more enjoyable to move through.

Mine usually includes tea, breakfast, a few minutes without my phone, and enough time to feel like I actually had a morning before everything else begins.

I Try Not to Start With My Phone

This is probably the smallest change, but it makes the biggest difference.

I have been trying not to check my phone the second I wake up.

Instead, I open the curtains, make the bed, or head straight to the kitchen.

Some mornings I make it ten minutes before checking anything. Some mornings it is two.

I am not trying to turn it into a rule.

I just like having a few minutes where the first thing I see is not an email, a notification, or someone else's plans for the day.

Then I Put the Kettle On

Tea is usually the first real part of my morning.

As the season starts to change, I find myself reaching for chai, spiced rooibos, or anything with cinnamon, cardamom, or another warming spice a little more often.

While the water heats, I usually tidy the kitchen a little or decide what I am going to make for breakfast.

It is not a grand ritual.

That is probably why I like it.

The kettle goes on, the tea steeps, and the morning has officially started.

If you are more of a coffee person, the same idea applies. There is something nice about having one thing you make the same way most mornings simply because you enjoy it.

I Stay in Comfortable Clothes for a While

If I am working from home or do not need to leave right away, I rarely get dressed first thing.

I stay in a robe or comfortable clothes while I make tea and breakfast.

There is plenty of time later for real clothes.

I like that small stretch of the morning when I am technically awake, but the day has not fully started yet.

It feels different from getting dressed immediately and moving straight into work mode.

I Give Myself a Little Time Before Email

This part changes depending on the morning.

Sometimes I read.

Sometimes I flip through a magazine.

Sometimes I sit at the kitchen table and finish my tea without doing much of anything.

I used to think that if I had ten free minutes, I should use them for something productive.

Now I am much happier letting ten minutes just be ten minutes.

That might be my favorite part of the whole routine.

Breakfast Is Usually Simple

Breakfast starts changing around this time of year too.

As mornings get a little cooler, warm oats with cinnamon, toast with apple butter, yogurt with granola, or something baked that can be reheated the next morning all start sounding good again.

Nothing elaborate.

The only real goal is to sit down for it when I can.

Even ten minutes at the table feels different from eating while standing at the counter or answering messages.

On weekends, I let breakfast take longer.

That is usually when there is another cup of tea.

How to Make Your Own Morning Feel More Hygge

You do not need to copy someone else's routine.

Start with the part of your morning you already enjoy.

If you love coffee, make time to actually sit down with it.

If breakfast is your favorite part, keep something easy on hand that you look forward to eating.

If you like reading, leave your book somewhere you will see it in the morning.

If the house is usually busy, try finding ten quiet minutes before everyone else gets up.

The best routine is the one that feels realistic enough to keep coming back to.

It does not need to be long, and it does not need to happen every day.

It just needs to include something you actually like.

A Few Things I Keep Reaching For

My mornings around this time of year usually end up revolving around the same few things.

A favorite mug.

A tea that feels just right as summer starts giving way to cooler days.

Something good for breakfast.

A book or magazine nearby.

And enough time to enjoy at least one of them.

The Part I Look Forward to Most

My morning does not look exactly like this every day.

Sometimes there is time for tea, breakfast, and a few pages of a book.

Sometimes I am answering an email while the kettle is still boiling.

That is fine too.

What I like most is having one or two small things in the morning that feel familiar and enjoyable before the day gets busy.

For me, that is enough to make the whole morning feel better.
