Why we started Hygge Box
There are many facets of hygge that we all experience in our own way. It is more of a mental state than physical, which can be achieved through various activities. It could be sitting safe on the couch with a cozy blanket and cup of tea while candles flicker or a moment by the campfire with the family toasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate in a giant mug. Whatever it is, at that particular moment when it feels right, you are hygge. It is celebrating the simple and focusing on the moment.
Americans have been in pursuit of happiness and living out their lives, they have been seeking hygge but many didn’t know there was a name for it, until recently. And the beauty of hygge is that it’s about you, and only you. It is about making time for self-care.
Hygge is a hug for the soul. You want a slice of that decadent chocolate cake? Eat it. Want to spend all night under a blanket with a cup of hot tea and your favorite book? We support you. Whatever it is that makes you feel calm and connected, hygge is fully behind you. #BestLifeStyleChoiceEver.
It All Started When...
We took a trip to Sweden. There was little daylight which meant we spent a lot of time in the cabin with warm beverages, lit candles, home-cooked meals, fireplaces and fine company. After that trip, we realized that we didn’t need a lot to feel fulfilled. The candles, blankets, cookies and books – they were just mediums setting the stage for comfort, safety and togetherness - the true producers of happiness.
When we arrived back to NYC, we felt a stronger need than ever to escape from the constant feeling of being plugged in – the demands that comes with living a busy and hyper-connected life. Maybe it was our experience in Sweden but we could see that our bodies were taking a toll and we finally came to the realization that self-care is necessary and we need to start now.
We found ourselves reading articles about meditation, being in the present moment, making the most of simple pleasures and other tips for leading a happier & healthier life. We started a gratitude journal which we wrote in every night. With our friends, we set up more get-togethers with good meals and meaningful connections & conversations (not about work, politics or any other possible controversial issues). All these little things we incorporated into our daily lives, these are the elements of hygge. From that point on, we adopted the hygge lifestyle and became devoted to practicing it everyday.
In 2017, we started Hygge Box™ to provide busy individuals with a regular dose of cozy time, giving them a break from their active lives with a box of treats that inspire and evoke hyggelig (nice) moments. Our mission at Hygge Box™ is to help you practice and extend this mindset. We live in a world which seems to get busier by the second but we need to take a minute to breathe. We need to take a break, relax and enjoy the small things in life.
Hygge is about the simple things in life like cozy moments, treats and creating memories.
We believe that loved ones and community are central to happiness and we support you.
We found that happiness can be so simple when we value togetherness, quiet moments, and self care.
